Sleep
Apnea affects
about 12 million adults in the United States. It is manifested by
multiple pauses in breathing while asleep, poor sleep quality, and
daytime sleepiness.
If
untreated, patients are at increased risk for
hypertension, heart attack, stroke, arrythmias, and
driving accidents. Adults
often demonstrate multiple levels of obstruction when examined and
may benefit from nasal and throat surgery such as septoplasty,
polypectomy, turbinate reduction, tonsillectomy, and
soft palate/uvula reduction based on clinical evaluation.
Children
with sleep apnea can present with loud snoring, sleep deprivation,
bed wetting, attention deficit, cranky
behavior, slowed growth, poor
concentration at school, and abnormal facial or dental development.
The majority of these kids have large tonsils and adenoid,
AND respond
very well to a tonsillectomy
and adenoidectomy.
